2025 Russell G. Smith Travelling Fellow: Dr. Njalalle Baraza
Dr. Njalalle Baraza - 2025 Russell G. Smith Travelling Fellow!
Dr. Njalalle Baraza has been awarded the 2025 Russell G. Smith Memorial Travelling Fellowship Grant and will be visiting BC Children’s Hospital in fall 2025.
Dr. Baraza, known affectionately as “Jal,” has made a remarkable impact in the field of pediatric orthopaedics. His journey into medicine was inspired at a young age by his father, a surgeon as well. This early exposure sparked his deep connection to the medical field and set him on his path. After completing his initial fellowship in arthroscopic surgery, Dr. Baraza shifted his focus to pediatric orthopaedics—a subspecialty he saw as having so much more potential to grow in order to improve the lives of children.
In 2020 and 2021, Dr. Baraza completed his fellowship in pediatric orthopaedic surgery, working closely with our very own Dr. Kishore Mulpuri. His work is driven by a lifelong commitment to improving patient outcomes, and his dedication to staying current with medical advancements is a testament to the trust patients place in him.
Dr. Baraza currently practices as a pediatric and sports orthopaedic surgeon in Nairobi, Kenya. His mission is to continuously refine his skills, ensuring he can provide the highest quality care to his patients. This year, he’ll be back here with us at the Hippy Lab because of the Russel G. Smith Fellowship, and we are over the moon to have him back!
Dr. Baraza’s visit to BC Children’s Hospital is supported by the Russell G. Smith Travelling Fellowship Grant, awarded in honour of the legacy of I’m A HIPpy founding Chair, Russell G. Smith, and his passionate support for improving global pediatric hip health. This grant is awarded annually to a member of the hip health community from an under-resourced global region by way of a travelling fellowship visit to the Hippy Lab at BC Children’s Hospital.
